Iran cites energy leverage as US-Iran peace deal odds drop

Iran’s parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf suggested Tehran retains leverage against the US, citing “energy and shipping cards.” The US-Iran peace deal market for April 30 is at 2% YES, down from 10% yesterday.

Ghalibaf’s statement comes as the fragile two-week ceasefire nears expiration. The US-Iran peace deal market shows the April 30 contract at 2% YES, an 8-point drop in 24 hours. The May 31 contract is at 31.5% YES, while June 30 is at 50.5% YES, so traders price in some chance of resolution past the immediate deadlines but very little before May.

In the diplomatic meeting location market, odds for no meeting by June 30 are at 14.1% YES, up from 9% a day ago. That 5-point jump tracks with Ghalibaf’s hardened rhetoric. All sub-markets in this contract are synced at 14.1% YES, with no divergence across the term structure.

Daily USDC trading volume on the peace deal market is at $854,588. It takes $27,667 to move the April 30 odds by 5 points, which means substantial resistance to price shifts. The largest move was a 6-point spike that didn’t hold, showing volatility without a sustained trend change.

Ghalibaf’s comments are a reference to Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly 20% of global oil passes. This reads more as posturing than a strategic shift, but it signals Tehran’s unwillingness to negotiate under pressure. At 2¢, a YES share for an April 30 peace deal pays $1, a 50x return. Almost nobody is betting on a last-minute breakthrough.

Watch for announcements from Pakistani mediators or new US sanctions, either of which could move these markets. With the ceasefire deadline approaching, expect higher volatility across both contracts.
