Rangers hold talks for potential Ibrox return of Vaclav Cerny
The Czech winger left a mark during his loan spell and could be heading back to Glasgow if early-stage negotiations progress
Rangers are in discussions to bring Václav Černý back to Ibrox, potentially reuniting the club with a player who became one of the most productive attackers in Scottish football during his loan spell last season. The talks are still in their early stages, but the intent is clear: Rangers want their goal threat back.
Turkish journalist Murat Ozen reported the interest on the Orta Cizgi YouTube channel, indicating that Rangers have opened a dialogue with Beşiktaş about the Czech winger. Černý only moved to the Turkish club on a permanent deal in September 2025, making any potential transfer a complicated proposition from the start.
What Cerny brought to Rangers the first time
During his loan spell in the 2024-25 season, Černý scored 18 goals and provided 10 assists across 52 appearances in all competitions. In league play alone, he contributed 12 goals in 33 matches.
The loan arrangement came via VfL Wolfsburg, who owned ÄŒerný’s registration at the time. After his strong performances at Ibrox, Wolfsburg reportedly set a £9 million asking price for the winger. That figure apparently proved too steep for Rangers, and ÄŒerný returned to Germany before eventually moving to BeÅŸiktaÅŸ on a permanent basis.
His contract with the Turkish club runs until June 2028, with an option for an additional year. That’s a significant commitment from BeÅŸiktaÅŸ, and it means any deal to bring ÄŒerný back to Scotland would require the Turkish side to agree to either a sale or another loan arrangement.
Why this is far from straightforward
ÄŒerný’s agent has previously expressed skepticism about a return to Rangers following the loan spell. Then there’s the financial reality: Wolfsburg wanted £9 million after the loan, and BeÅŸiktaÅŸ paid a permanent transfer fee to acquire him. Any sale price from the Turkish club would need to recoup that investment at minimum.
There’s no official confirmation from either club yet. These are early-stage conversations, with no official confirmation yet from Rangers or BeÅŸiktaÅŸ.
What this means for Rangers fans and the transfer window
Rangers have a track record of converting successful loan spells into permanent signings. With ÄŒerný, the fit was clearly right on the pitch, with 18 goals and 10 assists in a single season. The agent’s reported skepticism is a real obstacle, and BeÅŸiktaÅŸ has no obvious incentive to sell cheaply given the length of ÄŒerný’s contract through June 2028.
