British Steel enters public ownership under new UK legislation
Parliament's passage of the Steel Industry (Nationalisation) Bill marks the first major re-nationalization since the 1980s and carries implications for global commodity markets and industrial policy debates.
The UK government has nationalized British Steel, bringing the company into public ownership with immediate effect after concluding that state control is essential to protect the nation’s steelmaking capability.
The decision follows the failure of negotiations with former owner Jingye and is intended to secure production at the Scunthorpe plant, safeguard jobs and ensure the continued supply of steel for critical sectors including infrastructure, defense and energy.
With the nationalization now complete, a newly appointed leadership team will focus on stabilizing operations, maintaining production and advancing plans for a competitive, low-carbon steel business.
The government said public ownership provides a foundation for long-term investment while supporting its broader ambition to revitalize the UK steel sector and strengthen industrial resilience.
