SMBC Nikko partners with Uniswap on Japan-compliant DeFi gateway targeted for mid-2027
A memorandum of understanding with Nethermind, Base and Nyx Foundation aims to bake AML checks directly into Uniswap v4 liquidity pools for eligible Japanese investors
One of Japan’s major securities firms wants to bring decentralized finance into the country’s regulated system. It plans to do that by building on Uniswap rather than fighting it.
On October 2, 2026, SMBC Nikko Securities and Nethermind signed a memorandum of understanding with Uniswap Labs, Base and Nyx Foundation. The goal is a Japan-focused DeFi Gateway, with completion targeted for mid-2027.
A memorandum of understanding is a statement of intent, not a launched product. Still, this is a traditional securities house formally aligning with a DeFi protocol, a regulator-friendly roadmap, and a Coinbase-linked blockchain.
What the DeFi Gateway is supposed to do
At its core, the project aims to create a liquidity-provisioning protocol with custom liquidity pools built to meet regulatory compliance requirements.
The partners plan to address compliance with Uniswap v4 hooks. Hooks are plug-in pieces of code that attach to a pool and run custom logic around trades. In this case, the hooks are meant to embed anti-money laundering (AML) and counter-financing of terrorism (CFT) measures directly into the compliant pools. Investor protections would sit inside the system itself rather than being bolted on afterward.
The intended audience is eligible investors in Japan. The aim is to let them access decentralized financial products within a framework regulators can recognize.

Who does what
SMBC Nikko will lead regulatory engagement and supply compliance expertise. Nethermind takes the technical side, including AI development and smart-contract security. Uniswap Labs brings the protocol and its v4 hook architecture. Base is the blockchain managed by Coinbase Technologies. Nyx Foundation rounds out the group of blockchain organizations.
SMBC Nikko and Nethermind will give regular updates to Japan’s Financial Services Agency (FSA) as the gateway takes shape.
A department built for exactly this
The gateway is a product of SMBC Nikko’s DeFi Technology Department, which the firm set up in February 2026 to explore opportunities in digital assets. That puts roughly eight months between creating the department and signing a multi-party agreement with Uniswap Labs, Base, and Nyx Foundation.
What this means for DeFi and Japanese markets
The biggest idea here is compliance at the protocol level. If it works, the AML and CFT rules would travel with the liquidity pool itself, which could let regulated investors interact with decentralized infrastructure more directly.
For Uniswap, the agreement is a real-world test of whether v4 hooks can serve as compliance tooling. For Base, it puts Coinbase’s chain inside a regulated institutional project in one of Asia’s most closely supervised markets.
The plan depends on smart-contract security holding up, AI and compliance tooling working as intended, and the FSA staying comfortable with the approach as it develops.
