About Synapse

Synapse is a cross-chain interoperability protocol that lets users transfer and swap assets and arbitrary data, including smart contract calls, across multiple layer 1, layer 2, and sidechain blockchains. It operates as an Ethereum-based bridge and messaging protocol, with an associated Synapse Chain designed as an optimistic rollup execution environment for cross-chain use cases. The protocol also supports generalized cross-chain messaging, allowing decentralized applications to implement native cross-chain functionality. Synapse launched in 2021 on the Ethereum platform. Its native token, SYN, is an ERC-20 token deployed on Ethereum and across multiple other chains, including Fantom and Optimism. SYN has two main purposes: governing the protocol through the Synapse DAO and incentivizing liquidity providers who support cross-chain swaps and transfers. SYN has a fixed maximum supply of 250 million tokens, with circulating supply in the low- to mid-230 million range as of mid-2026.
