Bitcoin records first bullish 13/34-week EMA crossover in 3.5 years
A Raymond James technical analyst flagged the signal on Bitcoin's weekly chart, with MACD momentum also turning positive
Bitcoin just did something on its weekly chart that it hasn’t done in three and a half years. Its 13-week exponential moving average crossed above its 34-week EMA, a bullish signal that last appeared before plenty of today’s traders had opened their first exchange account.
The crossover took place on October 12, 2026. It was highlighted by David Cox, CMT, CFA, a technical analyst at Raymond James. Chart watchers tend to treat it as a sign that the medium-term trend may be turning in buyers’ favor.
What the crossover actually shows
A moving average smooths out price noise by averaging closing prices over a set window. An exponential moving average does the same job but gives more weight to recent prices, so it reacts faster when the market shifts direction.
The 13-week EMA tracks roughly a quarter of price action. The 34-week EMA covers a much longer stretch. When the faster line climbs above the slower one, recent prices are outpacing the longer-term average.
Bitcoin was trading at approximately $82,810 when the signal was reported, down about 1% intraday. Across various sources, the reported trading range ran between $82,810 and $84,000.
The supporting indicators
The crossover didn’t show up alone. Cox’s weekly chart also showed positive readings in the MACD histogram, which pointed to building upward momentum.
MACD, short for moving average convergence divergence, measures the gap between two moving averages. The histogram visualizes whether that gap is widening or narrowing. When the bars turn positive and grow, it suggests buying pressure is picking up rather than fading.

The signal also fits within a broader uptrend visible on Bitcoin’s weekly chart. On shorter timeframes, bullish alignments across the 50-day, 100-day and 200-day moving averages have been observed since mid-2025.
That alignment matters because it means the short, medium and long-term averages have been stacked in a bullish order. The new weekly crossover adds a slower, heavier confirmation on top of those daily signals.
Background: why weekly signals carry weight
Weekly crossovers are rarer by design. The fact that this one took three and a half years to reappear tells you how much sustained price movement it takes to trigger it.
History offers a mixed guide. Prior crossovers of this kind have often been followed by either substantial price advances or stretches of consolidation, and which outcome played out depended heavily on broader market conditions at the time.
The backdrop this time includes ongoing attention on ETF inflows and inflation data. Both have become recurring reference points for traders trying to gauge whether institutional demand and macro conditions support higher prices.
What this means for traders and investors
The more useful read may be in how the indicators interact over the coming weeks. A crossover backed by a rising MACD histogram and supportive daily alignments is a sturdier setup than a crossover standing alone.
Price levels also matter. The reported range of $82,810 to $84,000 gives traders a near-term zone to monitor.
Then there’s the macro layer. ETF flow data and inflation readings sit outside the chart entirely, but they can easily override what the moving averages suggest.
