About Ethereum
Ethereum is an open-source blockchain platform whose native token is ether. It was built to run smart contracts and decentralized applications, so developers can deploy programs that execute without a central operator. Ether pays for transaction fees and the computing work that keeps those applications running. Vitalik Buterin described the project in a 2013 white paper, and the network went live in 2015. Ethereum switched from mining to proof of stake in September 2022, in an upgrade known as the Merge, where validators lock up ether to secure the chain. It has no fixed supply cap: new ether is issued under protocol rules, and part of each fee is burned and removed from circulation.
