About Midnight
Midnight is a privacy-focused blockchain network that enables programmable privacy for transactions and smart contract computation. It was incubated by Input Output (IO), the blockchain engineering company founded by Charles Hoskinson, and has a close connection to the Cardano ecosystem. Development spanned several years before the project reached its major public milestones: the NIGHT token launched in December 2025, and the mainnet genesis block was reported on 30, 31 March 2026. Midnight uses a dual-token model. NIGHT is the native governance and utility token, used for on-chain governance and staking-related functions. A separate resource called DUST pays transaction fees on the network, keeping the fee layer independent from governance. NIGHT has a fixed maximum supply of 24 billion tokens. The network is designed for applications that require confidential transactions and programmable computation within the broader Cardano-adjacent ecosystem.
