About Zilliqa

Zilliqa is a public blockchain platform designed for scalability and smart contract execution, using sharding to process transactions in parallel across multiple subgroups of nodes. The project was created by a team from the National University of Singapore, with Xinshu Dong, Amrit Kumar, and Prateek Saxena among the founders; the project company was formed in 2017. Zilliqa's initial token launch took place on 31 August 2017, and its mainnet went live in January 2019. The original network combined proof-of-work for node identity and leader selection with practical Byzantine fault tolerance for block finality. A later upgrade, Zilliqa 2.0, transitioned the network to proof-of-stake consensus. The native token is ZIL, which is used to pay transaction fees and gas costs, to stake on the updated network, and to participate in governance. ZIL is also the primary asset for decentralized applications, payments, and other on-chain services built on the platform. The total supply of ZIL is capped at 21 billion tokens.
