About Osmosis
Osmosis is an application-specific blockchain in the Cosmos ecosystem that operates as a decentralized exchange and automated market maker. It enables cross-chain liquidity and trading through the Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol. Josh Lee and Sunny Aggarwal founded Osmosis Labs and launched the DEX in June 2021. The network runs as a Cosmos app-chain using proof-of-stake consensus, with validators securing the chain. One distinctive feature of its staking design is superfluid staking, which lets liquidity providers stake OSMO while simultaneously supplying it to liquidity pools. The native token, OSMO, is used to pay transaction fees, secure the network through staking, and participate in on-chain governance over protocol parameters and upgrades. Users trade and provide liquidity for assets from Cosmos and other ecosystems, including Ethereum, Solana, Avalanche, and Polkadot, via IBC and bridging integrations. OSMO has a hard-capped maximum supply of 1 billion tokens. 100 million tokens were distributed at genesis, and the remainder follows a multi-year emissions schedule that periodically reduces issuance in a process called "thirdenings." These emissions are allocated to staking rewards, liquidity incentives, and community purposes. Osmosis is one of the primary decentralized exchanges and liquidity infrastructure layers within the Cosmos ecosystem.
