About Canton
Canton is a public, privacy-enabled Layer 1 smart-contract blockchain built for institutional finance and the tokenization of real-world assets. Digital Asset developed it, and the Global Synchronizer Foundation handles ongoing token governance. The mainnet and Canton Coin launched in 2024. The network uses a proof-of-stake-style validator model with Super Validators and application providers, supported by the Splice infrastructure layer. Canton Coin (ticker CC) is the network's native utility token. It pays network fees, rewards validators and infrastructure operators, and enables participation in on-chain governance through Super Validator roles. There was no pre-mine, presale, or venture capital allocation; tokens are earned by providing network utility. The supply model follows a burn-mint equilibrium: holding fees and transaction activity continuously burn CC, while new CC is minted as validator rewards. This produces an effectively uncapped but demand-sensitive issuance with no permanent fixed maximum. Canton is designed to support on-chain settlement and lifecycle management of tokenized financial instruments in a privacy-preserving smart-contract environment for institutional participants.
