About POL (ex-MATIC)
POL is the native token of the Polygon ecosystem, used for fees, staking, governance, and validator rewards across Polygon's multichain network. Polygon was founded in 2017 by Jaynti Kanani, Sandeep Nailwal, Anurag Arjun, and Mihailo Bjelic as a layer-2 scaling solution for Ethereum. The project launched as Matic Network in 2017 and rebranded to Polygon when the broader network went live in June 2020. Polygon runs on a proof-of-stake consensus model, and POL is the staking and gas token under the Polygon 2.0 upgrade that replaced the earlier MATIC token. The migration from MATIC to POL was set on a one-to-one basis, with an initial supply of 10 billion tokens. POL is not strictly capped; it is subject to ongoing emissions as described in Polygon's documentation, with new tokens distributed as validator incentives and ecosystem rewards. POL is the token Polygon uses to coordinate its scalable, Ethereum-linked infrastructure for payments, smart contracts, and decentralized applications.
