Anthropic releases free one-hour crash course on building AI agents with Opus 5.5

The tutorial covers agent architecture, skill-building, and orchestration on Anthropic's cheaper new flagship model
Anthropic engineers have released a free crash course on building AI agents with Claude Opus 5.5. The whole thing runs about one hour.
The timing is deliberate. Opus 5.5 is only weeks old, and Anthropic now needs developers who know how to use it.
What’s in the course
The crash course was made public in mid-October 2026. It covers Claude Managed Agents, agent architecture, and a concept Anthropic calls agent dreaming.
The video is split into four timestamped segments, so viewers can jump to what they need.
The introduction starts at 00:00. Agent architecture begins at 07:45, which covers how an agent is structured: what it knows, what tools it can reach, and how it decides what to do next.
Skill-building starts at 23:40 and takes up the biggest chunk of the runtime. The final segment, dreaming and orchestration, kicks off at 54:00.
The model behind the lesson
Claude Opus 5.5 launched on September 22, 2026. Its main selling point is cost efficiency.

Opus 5.5 performs at a level comparable to its predecessor, Opus 5. It does so at roughly 40% lower cost on typical workloads, at about $4 per million tokens compared to $20 for Opus 5.
Price matters more for agents than for regular chatbot use. An agent might call a model dozens or hundreds of times to finish a single job. Every step burns tokens, the units of text that AI providers bill for. A cheaper model per step adds up fast when the steps multiply.
Anthropic has also pitched Opus 5.5 on safety. During behavioral audits, the model showed an 85% reduction in risky boundary circumvention attempts compared with earlier versions.
Part of a bigger education push
The crash course fits into Anthropic’s Academy, the company’s home for self-paced training. In 2026, the Academy hosts between 13 and 27 free courses on AI-related topics.
Those courses range from Claude’s core principles to practical applications, including material on Claude Code. The new agent tutorial adds a hands-on layer on top of that library.
Anthropic is applying that playbook to AI agents. Teach developers on Claude, and the projects they build next are more likely to run on Claude.
What this means
The pairing is what stands out. Anthropic shipped a model that is about 40% cheaper on typical workloads, then followed within weeks with a tutorial that teaches developers to use it for agents. Agents are exactly the workloads where per-call savings compound.
