Arsenal faces dilemma in Julián Álvarez transfer tussle as €150 million offer takes shape

Arsenal is willing to spend up to €150 million, roughly £128 million, to pry Julián Álvarez away from Atlético Madrid this summer. The problem: Álvarez would rather go to Barcelona.

The three-way deadlock

Álvarez, 26, has made it known he wants to leave Atlético Madrid ahead of the 2026-27 season. His preferred destination is Barcelona, which would keep him in La Liga. Atlético has publicly stated they will not sell Álvarez to a direct La Liga rival. So the club’s position is firm: if Álvarez leaves, he leaves the league entirely.

The proposed fee of €150 million would obliterate Arsenal’s current transfer record. The Gunners paid £105 million for Declan Rice. Paying £128 million for Álvarez would represent a 22% jump over that benchmark, making it comfortably the most expensive signing in the club’s history.

Why Arsenal wants Álvarez so badly

Arsenal’s interest in Álvarez reportedly dates back to January 2026. Manager Mikel Arteta has been personally involved in the courtship, and sporting director Andrea Berta has been laying the groundwork behind the scenes.

Álvarez joined Atlético from Manchester City for €95 million in August 2024. He left the Etihad because he wanted to be the undisputed focal point of an attack rather than rotating with Erling Haaland. For Arsenal, Álvarez has already demonstrated he can perform in the Premier League during his time at Manchester City.

His contract with Atlético runs until 2030, and his release clause sits at €500 million. The €150 million Arsenal is reportedly prepared to offer is a negotiated figure.

Cracks in the player’s resolve

During a 2-2 draw against Villarreal, Álvarez was booed by sections of the Atlético Madrid fanbase.

Arsenal’s alternatives include Juventus winger Kenan Yildiz, though Álvarez remains their primary target. The transfer window closes on September 1, 2026.
