The Portuguese giants are reshaping their backline after losing António Silva and Nicolás Otamendi this summer

Benfica is closing in on a deal worth approximately €7 million for a 19-year-old left-footed center-back, adding yet another piece to what has become a comprehensive defensive overhaul this summer. The move would mark the third center-back acquisition of the transfer window for the Lisbon club, which has been aggressively restocking after losing two pillars of its backline.

A summer of defensive upheaval

Benfica’s shopping spree at the back was born of necessity. António Silva departed for Bournemouth in a deal worth an estimated €25-30 million. Nicolás Otamendi, the veteran Argentine who provided experience and steel, also left the club.

The biggest outlay so far has been Alessandro Circati, signed from Parma for a fee in the range of €18-20 million.

Then came Gabriel Índio, a 17-year-old Brazilian center-back signed from Athletic Club in Brazil for €4-5 million. That deal was agreed upon in mid-June and officially announced in late July, with Índio penning a contract through 2031.

The rumored €7 million move for the unnamed 19-year-old left-footer would bring total defensive spending this summer to somewhere in the neighborhood of €30 million across three signings. That’s a significant investment, though it’s worth noting that the Silva sale alone covered most of that bill.

Benfica’s youth-first blueprint

Benfica is building a defensive core with an average age that would make most academies jealous. A 17-year-old in Índio, a 19-year-old target, and Circati as the elder statesman of the group.

Gabriel Índio’s contract running until 2031 gives Benfica years of control over his future. Silva himself is a case study in this model: developed internally, integrated into the first team, and eventually sold for a figure that dwarfed any initial investment.
