CME Group posts record $1.3 billion in October crypto weekend trading
Weekend activity in CME's crypto futures and options jumped 55% from September as its 24/7 trading model gains traction
Crypto markets have never cared what day it is. CME Group’s crypto desk, until recently, did.
That gap is closing. Crypto weekend trading at CME Group reached $1.3 billion in notional volume in October 2026. Average daily weekend volume climbed 55% from September to a record $340 million.
The figures are the clearest sign yet that CME’s round-the-clock crypto experiment is working. It launched in May 2026, so it is barely half a year old.
The October numbers
The weekend data sits inside a broader record month for the Chicago-based exchange operator.
CME Group logged a record monthly average daily volume (ADV) of 30 million contracts across all asset classes in October 2026. That was up 15% year over year.
Crypto contributed an ADV of 145,000 contracts. Those contracts carried an average daily notional value of $7.85 billion.
Against that $7.85 billion daily crypto figure, the $340 million weekend daily average still looks modest. Weekend trading remains a fraction of weekday activity.

Other asset classes kept pace. Interest rate contracts averaged 14.8 million contracts per day in October, and equity index products averaged 8.8 million.
Six months of 24/7 trading
CME introduced its 24/7 model for crypto futures and options in May 2026. The goal was simple: let clients trade and hedge crypto exposure whenever the underlying market is moving, which is always.
Before the switch, weekends created a well-known blind spot. Bitcoin could swing sharply on a Saturday while CME contracts sat frozen until Monday’s open. Traders then had to manage the gap between where futures last closed and where spot prices had wandered.
From launch through the end of Q3 2026, cumulative weekend notional volume topped $3.7 billion. October’s $1.3 billion alone equals roughly a third of that entire stretch.
The single biggest weekend so far came from August 21 to 23, 2026. That session saw 69,600 contracts change hands, worth $554.7 million in notional value.
Bitcoin and Ether products continue to dominate. They accounted for about 95% of CME’s Q3 2026 crypto notional volume, which totaled approximately $469.5 billion.
What this means for traders and the market
The most direct beneficiaries are institutions that need regulated venues to manage risk. Many funds cannot simply hop onto an offshore exchange at 2 a.m. on a Sunday when Bitcoin starts moving. A CME contract gives them a familiar, regulated tool that now works on crypto’s schedule rather than Wall Street’s.
Liquidity is the key variable to watch. Weekend volume of $340 million per day is real activity, but it is thin compared with weekday crypto flows of $7.85 billion.
For CME itself, the October data supports a broader story. The exchange is posting records across rates, equities and crypto simultaneously. Crypto is a small slice of the 30 million contracts traded daily, but it is one of the faster-growing ones.
