João Palhinha has confirmed he’s leaving Tottenham Hotspur at the end of the season, with a return to Sporting CP at the top of his wish list. The Portuguese midfielder, on loan from Bayern Munich, cited personal reasons, primarily a desire to be closer to his family in Portugal, as the driving force behind the move.

Negotiations between Bayern Munich and Sporting CP are reportedly advancing, with a deal valued at around €25 million. That figure represents a discount from Bayern’s initial €30 million asking price, suggesting the German club is motivated to finalize a clean exit.

Why Spurs moved on

Tottenham’s decision not to pursue a permanent transfer for Palhinha wasn’t exactly a mystery. The club made significant midfield investments during the window, bringing in Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes. Palhinha drew the short straw.

To his credit, the Portuguese international contributed regularly during his 2025/26 loan spell. But Spurs clearly saw their future midfield identity running through different players, and Palhinha read the room.

Returning to Sporting CP carries emotional weight. It’s where Palhinha began his professional career before moves to Fulham, Bayern Munich, and eventually his loan stint in North London.
