South Korea denies US proposed Westinghouse stake
Seoul rejected a report that Washington sought Korean capital and construction expertise for a US nuclear expansion.
South Korea’s government denied a report that the United States had proposed Seoul acquire a stake in Westinghouse Electric, Bloomberg reported.
The denial followed a Korea Economic Daily report that Washington wanted South Korean capital and construction expertise to accelerate nuclear-power projects in the US. The newspaper cited unidentified government officials.
The report said one option involved a jointly funded special-purpose vehicle acquiring a Westinghouse stake, potentially using part of a $200 billion Korea-US strategic investment pledge. It said the size of any investment and stake had not been decided.
South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources said the report was “not in accordance with the facts.” Westinghouse and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power agreed in early 2025 to end long-running intellectual-property disputes and cooperate on global nuclear projects.
