Tencent links PayPal to WeChat Pay, enabling US payments in China
US travelers can now scan QR codes at millions of Chinese merchants through PayPal's integration with Tencent's TenPay Global platform.
Tencent Financial Technology has linked PayPal to WeChat Pay’s merchant network, allowing US PayPal users to make purchases across China by scanning WeChat Pay QR codes.
The service connects Tencent’s cross border payment platform TenPay Global with PayPal World, according to Tencent Financial Technology vice president Daniel Hong. The rollout begins with US users and will expand to PayPal users in other international markets in phases.
The integration gives American visitors access to one of China’s most widely used payment systems without needing a local Chinese wallet setup. WeChat Pay’s QR code network is used across retail, dining, transportation, and services, making mobile payments a core part of daily spending in China.
Tencent is also offering temporary fee waivers through 2026 to encourage use of foreign bank cards linked to WeChat Pay. The move comes as Tencent works to make inbound payments easier for international visitors ahead of APEC 2026 in Shenzhen.
