Tottenham’s £30M bet on Mathys Tel looks sharper after Sydney FC win
The former Bayern Munich forward's lone goal secured a 1-0 pre-season victory, but the bigger story is what Spurs' summer spending signals for the club's financial trajectory.
Tottenham Hotspur traveled to Australia for pre-season and came away with a 1-0 win over Sydney FC on July 29, courtesy of a 29th-minute strike from Mathys Tel.
Tel, who signed permanently with Spurs in June 2025 after a loan spell from Bayern Munich, is settling into his role as a cornerstone of the club’s attacking plans. The reported £30 million transfer fee, roughly €40 million, locked the 21-year-old French forward into a contract running through 2031.
Tel’s path to North London was anything but linear. Born in 2005 in France, with roots in Guadeloupe, he came through the Rennes academy before moving to Bayern Munich as a teenager. The loan to Tottenham gave both parties a trial run. The permanent deal suggests they liked what they saw.
Here’s the thing about £30 million in today’s transfer market: it’s simultaneously a serious sum and a relative bargain if Tel develops into the player his talent profile suggests. A 21-year-old with Bundesliga experience, locked in until 2031, represents the kind of asset that appreciates on and off the pitch.
The £30 million outlay for Tel came after Spurs were able to evaluate him during his loan stint. That’s risk mitigation in its purest form. Tel’s contract length is worth noting too. A deal through 2031 gives Tottenham six years of control over the player’s registration.
