US Treasury hosts G20 finance ministers in Asheville to discuss American economic power
Scott Bessent convenes global finance officials as US public debt tops $40 trillion and Treasury yields hit multi-decade highs
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is welcoming G20 finance ministers and central bank governors to Asheville, North Carolina, for a two-day meeting that kicks off August 31. The gathering runs through September 1 and falls under the US G20 presidency, giving Bessent’s team significant control over what gets discussed and what doesn’t. Deputy-level officials already met on August 29-30 to lay the groundwork.
What’s on the table
The official focus areas include pro-growth policies, resolving global economic imbalances, sovereign debt transparency, and supply chain resilience. One significant agenda item is the enforcement of US sanctions on Iran, with Washington pressing G20 partners for tighter economic compliance.
The Trump administration has signaled it wants to streamline the G20 Finance Track, keeping discussions tightly focused on macroeconomic fundamentals like productivity and innovation. The US is explicitly pushing for a “results-oriented” agenda.
Finance officials from major economies including Saudi Arabia and Japan have confirmed attendance. Business leaders are also expected to participate, reflecting the administration’s emphasis on private-sector involvement in shaping economic policy.
The $40 trillion elephant in the room
The US public debt has surpassed $40 trillion, roughly equivalent to the combined GDP of China and Japan. Longer-term Treasury yields have climbed to multi-decade highs, raising borrowing costs across the entire economy and sending ripple effects through global capital markets.

Bessent has framed the administration’s approach as one focused on growth as the primary mechanism for managing debt sustainability, growing the denominator faster than the numerator so the debt-to-GDP ratio improves over time.
Setting the stage for Miami
The Asheville meeting is part of a sequence that builds toward the G20 leaders’ summit scheduled for December 2026 in Miami. An earlier session in April 2026 in Washington laid initial foundations, and the deputies’ meetings preceding this weekend’s talks continue that groundwork.
The sanctions enforcement discussion adds a geopolitical dimension to the finance track. For G20 partners with significant trade relationships with Iran or other sanctioned entities, the Asheville meetings could force uncomfortable choices, as compliance with US sanctions often means restructuring trade finance operations, severing banking relationships, and absorbing economic costs.
