Arsenal weighs move to sign Malick Fofana from Lyon before transfer deadline
The Belgian winger could provide Arsenal with attacking reinforcement as Lyon's financial pressures force the French club's hand
Arsenal appears to be circling one of Ligue 1’s most exciting young wingers. Malick Fofana, the 21-year-old Belgian attacker currently at Olympique Lyonnais, has emerged as a genuine target for the Gunners as the Premier League transfer window ticks toward its August 31 close.
The interest isn’t one-sided either. Fofana’s representatives have reportedly approached Arsenal and other Premier League clubs directly.
Why Lyon can’t afford to keep him
Lyon’s failure to qualify for the UEFA Champions League this season has changed the calculus entirely. Fofana had previously signaled a willingness to stay in France if the club secured European football, but the winger is now widely expected to leave.
Lyon is reportedly seeking between €35 million and €40 million, including bonuses, for the player whose contract runs through June 2028. The club acquired Fofana from Belgian side Gent in January 2024 for €17 million plus €5 million in potential add-ons.
Fofana has already demonstrated he’s not interested in a sideways move. Hull City reportedly tabled a verbal offer of €35 million that the winger flatly rejected.

What Fofana brings to the table
Born on March 31, 2005, Fofana is still remarkably young for a player with his level of production. During the 2024-25 season, he registered 11 goals and 5 assists across all competitions.
The 2025-26 campaign has been less prolific. Fofana was limited to just 12 Ligue 1 appearances due to injury, managing 3 goals in that reduced sample size.
Fofana has scored multiple goals in the Europa League, proving he can perform on bigger stages against higher-caliber opposition.
Arsenal’s attacking calculus
The club is reportedly considering Fofana as a potential long-term replacement for Gabriel Martinelli.
Arsenal isn’t the only Premier League club paying attention. Sunderland and Crystal Palace are also monitoring Fofana’s situation.
