BigBear.ai stock jumps as much as 11.7% after over $225M in contract awards
The defense-focused AI firm stacked up federal wins since July, but shares are still hovering near 52-week lows
BigBear.ai finally gave shareholders something to smile about. The stock climbed as much as 11.7% intraday after the company disclosed it has secured more than $225 million in contract awards since July 2026.
Before anyone pops champagne, though: the shares were still trading around $2.40, close to their 52-week lows.
What BigBear.ai actually won
BigBear.ai Holdings (NYSE: BBAI) builds AI tools for security and defense customers. Its latest haul blends brand-new contracts with recompetes.
The customer list reads like a federal org chart. It includes US Customs and Border Protection, the FBI, and the US Coast Guard.
More than 25 of the awards are specific to generative AI, spanning agencies such as the FBI, NASA, the Coast Guard, the Department of Energy, and the Department of Veterans Affairs.
BigBear.ai is also gaining ground in homeland security and intelligence. The company has started work with various combatant commands and inside classified intelligence frameworks.
CEO Kevin McAleenan framed the wins as evidence of a solid foundation and a growing customer base. He pointed to the pairing of operational insight with differentiated technology as the key to delivering results for clients.

The numbers behind the rally
For Q2 2026, BigBear.ai reported revenue of $36.7 million, up 13% year over year.
Management also affirmed its full-year 2026 revenue guidance of $135 million to $165 million.
As of June 30, 2026, BigBear.ai’s backlog stood at approximately $270 million. Only 29% of that backlog is funded. Funded backlog means Congress or an agency has actually set aside the money. Unfunded backlog is more like a reservation at a restaurant: you have a table, but nobody has ordered yet.
Why the stock is still near its lows
The company has also been reshaping its board. BigBear.ai recently added retired US Army Lt. Gen. Sean A. Gainey as a director.
What this means for investors and the defense AI race
Winning more than 25 generative AI awards positions the company as a vendor agencies are willing to experiment with.
A 29% funded backlog leaves plenty of room for slippage if budgets tighten or programs get delayed.
BigBear.ai is scheduled to report Q3 results on October 27, 2026.
Watch a few things in that report. First, whether revenue keeps growing at a pace that keeps full-year results inside the $135 million to $165 million range. Second, whether the funded portion of backlog rises as the summer awards get obligated. Third, look for any color on how the generative AI contracts are progressing.
