Jack Dorsey’s Block just dropped a collaboration platform that treats AI agents less like fancy autocomplete and more like actual coworkers, complete with their own identities and cryptographic signatures. The platform is called Buzz, and it wants to replace your team’s duct-taped stack of Slack, GitHub, and whatever AI tool you’re currently copy-pasting prompts into.
Here’s the thing: Buzz isn’t just another workplace chat app with an AI chatbot bolted on. It’s built entirely on the Nostr protocol, the same decentralized messaging layer that Dorsey has been championing for years. Every message, every commit, every AI-generated output gets cryptographically signed. That means you can actually verify who, or what, produced a piece of work.
What Buzz actually does
At its core, Buzz combines three things that teams currently juggle across separate applications: real-time chat, Git repository hosting, and multi-model AI agent integration. The AI agent angle is where things get genuinely interesting. Rather than plugging into a single AI provider, Buzz supports multiple models including Claude Code and OpenAI Codex. Each AI agent gets a unique cryptographic identity within the system, allowing it to sign its own work and maintain independent authorship. In English: when an AI writes code or drafts a document in Buzz, there’s a verifiable, tamper-proof record that the AI did it, not a human pretending they wrote it at 2 AM.
The platform is available as a free desktop application across macOS, Windows, and Linux, with hosted options accessible at buzz.xyz. Organizations can also self-host their own Buzz instances, meaning they don’t need to rely on Block’s servers at all. The entire codebase is published under the Apache 2.0 license.
Dorsey’s Nostr bet comes full circle
Block’s decision to build Buzz on Nostr isn’t some random architectural choice. Dorsey has been one of Nostr’s most visible backers, donating 14 BTC to the protocol’s development back in 2022. Nostr is a decentralized protocol for signed messages and event handling, originally designed as a censorship-resistant social networking layer, with cryptographic foundations that make it well-suited for enterprise collaboration. Every event on Nostr is signed by a keypair, which means authenticity is baked into the protocol rather than bolted on after the fact.
The inspiration for Buzz reportedly came from the pain points that teams experience with fragmented AI usage. Context-switching between chat apps, code repositories, and various AI tools creates what the project frames as a loss of decision history. Buzz aims to function as a “hive mind” for teams, keeping all context, whether human or AI-generated, in a single cohesive workspace.
One notable absence: there are no cryptocurrency tokens or governance structures attached to Buzz. Block is positioning this squarely as a productivity tool, not a Web3 play with speculative tokenomics layered on top.
What this means for investors and the broader market
The competitive implications are real. Slack, owned by Salesforce, and GitHub, owned by Microsoft, are entrenched players with massive enterprise customer bases. Buzz’s cryptographic approach to AI agent management creates an audit trail that most enterprise tools simply don’t have, with each agent receiving its own Nostr-based identity with specific permissions.
Investors watching the enterprise software space should note the self-hosting capability. Organizations that are skittish about sending proprietary code and conversations through third-party servers now have an open-source option that lets them keep everything in-house.
