Blue Energy files permit application for gas-to-nuclear Texas data center
The Texas project would use gas turbines first, then add as many as five small modular reactors for a Crusoe AI data center.
Blue Energy Global has submitted the first part of a construction permit application to the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission for a Texas power project that will initially run on natural gas before adding nuclear reactors to supply a Crusoe data center.
Blue Energy said in a statement that it expects to submit the second part of its application in the second half of 2027.
At the Port of Victoria, about 140 miles (225 kilometers) southwest of Houston, the company plans to install gas turbines before adding as many as five small modular reactors.
Blue Energy has said beginning with gas turbines could let the project deliver power faster than relying solely on nuclear systems, which can take years to approve and build.

The project is one of several efforts to develop nuclear power for data centers, with companies seeking round-the-clock clean energy from reactor designs that have not yet been proven commercially.
Blue Energy already has agreements to use gas turbines from GE Vernova and a 300-megawatt reactor design from GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy.
