DeepSeek reportedly invests $21M in Unitree Robotics’ Shanghai IPO amid AI-robotics convergence hype
Via cnet.com
The AI lab's alleged stake in a $7 billion robotics IPO is fueling speculation about where artificial intelligence and physical infrastructure intersect, but verified details remain thin.
DeepSeek, the Chinese AI lab that rattled Silicon Valley earlier last year with its cost-efficient models, has reportedly invested approximately $20.8 million in Unitree Robotics ahead of the robotics company’s planned IPO on the Shanghai STAR Market. The offering could raise around 4.2 billion yuan, roughly $610 million, and value Unitree at up to 50 billion yuan, or approximately $7 billion.
Here’s the thing: the investment claim hasn’t been independently confirmed through regulatory filings or official statements from either company. What we do know is that Unitree’s IPO ambitions are real, the two companies share a hometown in Hangzhou, and their founders were both present at a high-profile meeting with President Xi Jinping in February 2025. That’s a lot of proximity, but proximity isn’t a term sheet.
What we actually know about the deal
The reported $20.8 million stake would be modest relative to Unitree’s overall raise, representing roughly 3.4% of the targeted $610 million. Neither company has publicly commented on the investment. No prospectus filing or cornerstone investor disclosure has surfaced to confirm DeepSeek’s participation.
The crypto angle: DePIN speculation and an unofficial token
Adding to the noise: a pre-market crypto token called UNITREE has appeared, claiming association with Unitree Robotics. No official connection between the token and the actual company has been established.

Why this matters for crypto investors
There are two distinct stories here that keep getting blended together. The first is a straightforward corporate finance story: a major AI lab may be investing in a robotics IPO. The second is a speculative crypto narrative about AI-robotics-blockchain convergence. Even if DeepSeek did invest in Unitree, there’s no indication that either company is exploring blockchain integration, tokenized coordination, or any crypto-native infrastructure. The UNITREE token situation is a textbook example: no official ties, no disclosed technology partnership, just a ticker symbol that matches a famous company name.
