Fed’s Waller sees case for steady rates if inflation keeps improving
Waller also said a reversal in recent inflation progress could lead him to favor a rate hike.
Fed Governor Christopher Waller said Thursday he would lean toward holding interest rates steady at the central bank’s next meeting if August inflation data confirm recent signs of improvement.
Waller said inflation data from June and July had shown progress and that continued improvement over the next two weeks would make him inclined to keep the federal funds rate at its current setting.
But Waller left open the possibility of a rate increase if the inflation trend reverses, highlighting the significance of the upcoming data for his policy decision.
