Inter goalkeeper Josep Martínez makes crucial save against Roma

There are saves, and then there are saves where you sacrifice your actual face for the cause. Josep Martínez chose the latter on matchday five of Serie A, throwing himself into a close-range effort from Donyell Malen and using his head, quite literally, to keep Inter Milan alive against Roma at the Stadio Olimpico.

The 68th-minute block was the kind of moment that separates competent goalkeepers from the slightly unhinged ones who become legends. With Roma already leading and momentum firmly behind the home side, Malen’s shot looked destined for the net. Martínez had other plans, and apparently zero regard for his facial structure.

The Spanish goalkeeper’s journey to becoming Inter’s first-choice shot-stopper has been a relatively swift one. Born in Alzira, Spain, on May 27, 1998, Martínez joined Inter from Genoa in July 2024 for a reported fee in the range of 13.5 to 14 million euros.

That fee is starting to look like a bargain. At 28, Martínez has settled into the role with the kind of authority that doesn’t come cheap in the transfer market. Earlier in 2026, he recorded clean sheets in both Coppa Italia and Serie A action, building a case as one of the league’s most reliable keepers.
