IonQ stock jumps 10% on quantum computing breakthrough with Synopsys
A hybrid quantum-classical approach cut engineering simulation runtimes by up to 14.6%, earning top honors at IEEE Quantum Week 2026
IonQ shares surged roughly 10% on September 17 after the quantum computing company revealed that a collaboration with Synopsys had produced measurable speed improvements in complex engineering simulations.
A hybrid quantum-classical workflow integrated into Synopsys’ widely used Ansys LS-DYNA simulation software delivered runtime reductions between 5.9% and 14.6% across multiple real-world engineering models. The research won the 1st Place Best Paper Award at IEEE Quantum Week 2026.
What actually happened under the hood
IonQ and Synopsys tested their hybrid approach on four distinct models: an automobile, an industrial drill component, a fluid impeller, and a jet engine assembly. The quantum algorithm handled data organization and eliminated unnecessary calculations before handing the problem off to classical solvers.
The meshes involved contained up to 35 million data points. All of this ran on IonQ’s 36-qubit Forte trapped-ion system, which the company says can scale to approximately 150 qubits.
Dr. Martin Roetteler from IonQ pointed to the significant reductions in simulation times as evidence that hybrid quantum methods are ready for commercial relevance. Prith Banerjee from Synopsys emphasized the advantages these methods bring specifically to engineering applications, where shaving even a few percentage points off simulation runtimes can compress product development cycles substantially.

Why a 14.6% speedup matters more than it sounds
Engineering simulation workloads at major manufacturers can run for days or even weeks. A 14.6% improvement on a simulation that takes 100 hours to complete saves nearly 15 hours per run.
The worst-performing test case still delivered a 5.9% reduction. Consistency across different model types suggests the approach is generalizable rather than cherry-picked for one favorable scenario.
The fact that Ansys LS-DYNA is already one of the most widely deployed simulation tools in engineering also matters. The quantum component plugs into existing workflows, which lowers the adoption barrier for enterprises that are curious about quantum but allergic to wholesale infrastructure changes.
IonQ’s broader 2026 strategy
The Synopsys collaboration fits into a year where IonQ has been stacking strategic moves. The company recently acquired SkyWater and launched the Superion 256 platform, its next-generation system designed to push qubit counts higher while maintaining the fidelity that trapped-ion architectures are known for.
