King Charles gathers AI leaders to discuss safety, regulation and control
About 30 executives, policymakers and researchers met privately at Dumfries House as experts warned that advanced AI could reshape trust and society.
King Charles III brought around 30 technology executives, policymakers and ethics researchers to a private AI summit at Dumfries House in Scotland, seeking assurances that the technology can be developed safely.
The guest list included Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Google DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis, OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar and Anthropic chief global affairs officer Tino Cuéllar. Researchers and public officials also discussed the risks and potential benefits of advanced AI.
Hassabis called for urgent action and international standards, warning that artificial general intelligence could arrive within a few years and have an impact far beyond previous industrial shifts. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has urged safeguards to keep pace with model development.
Other attendees raised concerns about AI’s effect on trust and the possibility of a surveillance state. King Charles has repeatedly emphasized AI safety, including during the UK’s 2023 AI Safety Summit at Bletchley Park.
