About Avalanche
Avalanche is a layer-1 blockchain and smart-contract platform, with AVAX as its native token. AVAX pays transaction fees, is staked to secure the network, and acts as a settlement asset across Avalanche's custom chains. Ava Labs launched the network in September 2020, with Emin Gun Sirer, Kevin Sekniqi, and Ted Yin as its co-founders. It uses a proof of stake design built on the Avalanche consensus protocol and the Snowman engine for ordered chains, a leaderless system where validators vote in proportion to their stake. Supply is capped at 720 million AVAX, and network fees are burned, which reduces the circulating amount over time.
