About BitTorrent
BitTorrent Token is a blockchain-based extension of the BitTorrent peer-to-peer file-sharing protocol. It tokenizes bandwidth and storage to economically incentivize participants in the BitTorrent network. Bram Cohen originally founded the BitTorrent protocol in 2001, and Justin Sun's TRON acquired BitTorrent Inc. in 2018. The BitTorrent Token was announced in January 2019 and launched in February 2019, initially issued as a TRC-10 token on the TRON blockchain and later also as a TRC-20 token. BTT is now the native token of BitTorrent Chain, an EVM-compatible proof-of-stake network where validators are secured through staking and delegation. The token is used to pay transaction fees on BitTorrent Chain, to stake or delegate to validators, to vote on governance proposals, and within applications like BitTorrent Speed and the BitTorrent File System. In those applications, BTT compensates peers for sharing bandwidth and storage and allows users to prioritize download speeds. BTT has a stated maximum supply of 990 trillion tokens following a redenomination, with circulating supply in the high-900-trillion range. Remaining tokens are held in reserve according to allocation documents. The token connects a legacy file-sharing network to a blockchain incentive layer, with the goal of sustaining decentralized content distribution and storage at scale.
