Dogecoin is an open-source, peer-to-peer cryptocurrency that started as a lighthearted, meme-based alternative to Bitcoin. People use it mainly for small payments and online tipping. Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer created it and launched the network in December 2013. Dogecoin relies on proof of work secured by the Scrypt algorithm, so miners confirm transactions and add blocks. Its supply is uncapped: the network issues roughly 10,000 new DOGE every minute with no maximum limit. That steady issuance sets it apart from coins that have a fixed cap.
