About Flow
Flow is a layer-1 blockchain designed for consumer-scale applications, including NFTs, games, and other decentralized apps. It is a standalone chain, separate from Ethereum. Dapper Labs created Flow, with key figures including Roham Gharegozlou, Dieter Shirley, and Mikhael Naayem. The project was introduced in 2019. The genesis block was created in 2020 with an initial supply of 1.25 billion FLOW. Validator rewards on mainnet were enabled in December 2020. Flow uses a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism with a multi-node architecture that divides validation work among specialized roles: consensus, collection, execution, and verification nodes. This division is intended to improve scalability. The native token is FLOW. It is used to pay transaction fees, stake for validator and delegator rewards, and support smart contract execution and other on-chain operations. FLOW has no hard supply cap and issues new tokens continuously through staking rewards, with approximately 5 percent of total supply distributed annually to validators and delegators. Total supply is around 1.68 billion FLOW. Flow is infrastructure for NFT and gaming applications aimed at mainstream consumer adoption.
