About Kaia
Kaia is an EVM-compatible Layer 1 public blockchain built for general-purpose settlement, DeFi, and on-chain financial applications, with a particular focus on Asian markets and integration with the KakaoTalk and LINE ecosystems. It was formed by merging the Klaytn network, originally developed by Kakao, and the Finschia network, originally developed by LINE, after governance-approved merge proposals were submitted by the Klaytn Foundation and Finschia Foundation in January 2024. The unified Kaia mainnet launched in late August 2024, with existing KLAY and FNSA balances converted into KAIA during the transition. Kaia uses a Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance consensus mechanism, delivering approximately one-second block times with immediate finality while remaining Ethereum-equivalent. The native coin, KAIA, is used to pay transaction fees, execute smart contracts, facilitate payments and in-app purchases, and reward consensus nodes and stakers through block rewards. KAIA follows an inflationary, uncapped supply model, with tokens issued automatically with each new block at an initial annual inflation rate of approximately 5.2%, distributed to contributors, stakers, and ecosystem funds. Total supply is in the low single-digit billions of tokens, with circulating supply reported at roughly 5.8 billion KAIA as of its first year of operation.
