The business traces its origins to Capital International global equity indexes created in 1968 and 1969, which were later distributed under the Morgan Stanley Capital International name; MSCI Inc. was incorporated as a separate entity in 1998. The company is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol MSCI and is a component of the S&P 500 index. It operates through four business segments: Index, Analytics, ESG and Climate, and All Other – Private Assets. Its best-known products are the MSCI World Index, the MSCI Emerging Markets Index, and the MSCI All Country World Index, which are widely used as benchmarks in global investing. The company also provides ESG ratings, climate analytics, risk and performance analytics, and real estate research and benchmarking. MSCI is headquartered in New York City and serves clients including asset managers, asset owners, and other financial intermediaries.
