About NEAR Protocol
NEAR Protocol is a layer-1, smart-contract blockchain built to run decentralized applications, with NEAR as its native token. Developers build applications such as finance tools, NFTs, payments, and games, and the token pays transaction fees, covers storage, and earns staking rewards. Illia Polosukhin and Alexander Skidanov founded the project in 2018, and the mainnet launched in 2020. NEAR uses proof of stake with a technique called Nightshade sharding, which splits the network into parallel pieces to handle more transactions. It started with a genesis supply of one billion tokens, and new NEAR is issued for staking rewards at a rate reported near 5 percent a year.
