Newcastle United submits transfer offer for Archie Gray, rejected by Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham has made its stance on the 20-year-old midfielder unmistakably clear, turning away interest from Newcastle and several other clubs
Newcastle United made a move for Tottenham Hotspur’s Archie Gray this summer. Tottenham said no, and apparently said it loudly enough that nobody should need to ask again.
The 20-year-old midfielder, who joined Spurs from Leeds United in July 2024 for roughly $30M, has racked up 52 appearances in just two seasons at the club.
Tottenham’s position is, to borrow a phrase, crystal clear
Tottenham’s leadership has categorically stated they will reject offers for Gray. The club has offered no encouragement whatsoever to interested parties.
Newcastle’s approach was reportedly rebuffed without much ceremony. Leeds United, Everton, Nottingham Forest, Bayern Munich, and Liverpool have all been linked with Gray at various points. None of them have gotten anywhere either.
Born on March 12, 2006, Gray is still only 20 years old.
Why Newcastle wanted him, and why it makes sense
At 52 appearances in roughly two years, Gray has demonstrated durability that belies his age. He’s not a prospect sitting on the bench waiting for cup games. He’s a regular contributor in one of the Premier League’s most competitive squads.
The rejection also comes amid broader speculation about a midfield overhaul at Spurs. Various reports have linked Tottenham with other midfield targets this summer, which naturally fueled rumors that some existing players might be expendable. Gray, clearly, is not one of them.
What this means for the summer window
Given that Bayern Munich and Liverpool are also circling, any future bidding war for Gray could escalate quickly beyond even the $30M Tottenham originally paid Leeds.
The Premier League is not exactly overflowing with 20-year-olds who’ve already logged 50-plus top-flight appearances. Tottenham has made one thing abundantly clear: Archie Gray isn’t going anywhere.
