Newcastle United leads Tottenham 1-0 after Elanga’s goal

Anthony Elanga is starting to look like a bargain. The £55 million man put Newcastle United ahead 1-0 against Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on August 29, scoring for the second consecutive Premier League match.

His opening goal against Spurs came just six days after he netted his first Premier League goal for Newcastle in a 2-2 draw with Liverpool.

Two matches, two goals, zero losses

Newcastle entered this fixture still searching for their first win of the 2026/27 Premier League season. The opening-day draw against Liverpool was encouraging but ultimately unsatisfying.

Tottenham’s situation was even less comfortable. Spurs lost their season opener, meaning this match carried early-season urgency for both sides.

Newcastle’s starting lineup reflected the ambition of their summer spending. Alongside Elanga, Yoane Wissa and new signing Nico González both featured from the start.

Elanga’s rapid rise at St. James’ Park

Elanga completed his transfer to Newcastle on July 11, 2025, leaving Nottingham Forest after establishing himself as one of the most exciting wide players in the Premier League. The Swedish international had previously come through Manchester United’s academy before finding consistent form at Forest.

His goal against Liverpool in the 2-2 draw was a statement. Backing it up against Tottenham, away from home, was an even bigger one.
