Newcastle United has walked away from its pursuit of goalkeeper James Trafford, ending a transfer saga that stretches back over two years. The decision leaves Leeds United as the clear favorite to land the young keeper from Manchester City.

A transfer trail that went cold

Newcastle’s interest in Trafford is not a new development. The club first explored signing the goalkeeper during the summer of 2024, well before he had even completed his stint at Burnley. That initial pursuit didn’t materialize, and Trafford eventually made his way back to Manchester City in July 2025 through a £27 million buy-back clause.

Trafford had originally moved to Burnley in 2023 for a fee reported between £15 million and £19 million, meaning City paid a premium to bring him back to the Etihad. He signed a five-year deal with Manchester City upon his return.

In June 2026, Newcastle rekindled its pursuit, making fresh contact. But further contact dwindled following City’s valuation of the player, and Newcastle’s interest cooled through July 2026.

As of July 23, 2026, Leeds entered active discussions with City, and reports suggest Trafford himself is leaning toward a move to Elland Road.

Why Trafford became a hot commodity

A product of Manchester City’s academy, Trafford took the conventional route of loan spells and a permanent move to gain first-team experience. His move to Burnley in 2023 gave him regular top-flight minutes, and City’s decision to exercise the buy-back clause in 2025 for £27 million was itself a statement of confidence in his value.

For Leeds, landing a goalkeeper of Trafford’s caliber would represent a statement signing, particularly given that Trafford reportedly prefers the move to Elland Road, giving Leeds meaningful leverage in negotiations with City.
