The comparison signals real momentum for AI search, though outside data shows Google still dominates where traffic and clicks are concerned

OpenAI says ChatGPT now handles search volume equal to about one-fifth of Google’s. The company adds that its share is growing quickly.

What the numbers actually say

The core claim is about volume, not market share. OpenAI is comparing how many queries flow through ChatGPT against the queries Google processes.

That distinction matters. The research behind this story notes that OpenAI has not directly claimed a “20% search market share” in its official communications. That label grew out of how the figure was interpreted in media coverage.

Outside estimates land in a similar neighborhood. ChatGPT processes approximately 2.5 billion prompts per day as of mid-2025. That works out to about 18% of Google’s daily search queries, a comparison built on third-party data reflecting January 2025 estimates of Google’s volume.

Someone asking ChatGPT to rewrite a cover letter is generating a prompt. They are not doing anything Google would count as a query. That gap is why other trackers produce much smaller numbers.

When analysts try to isolate only the search-like activity, the share shrinks. Estimates of ChatGPT’s search-equivalent share range from 7.5%, according to seoClarity in October 2026, to around 12%, according to Ahrefs in February 2026.

How people use ChatGPT

OpenAI’s own usage data helps explain the spread. The company’s Signals v3.0 report, covering July through September 2026, classified roughly 20.1% of messages as “seeking information.”

Put plainly, about one in five conversations with ChatGPT looks like something a person might otherwise have typed into a search bar. The other four are doing something else: writing, coding, brainstorming, or chatting.

The scale of the user base is what makes even that fraction significant. OpenAI’s services reached 1.2 billion weekly users by late September 2026.

Google still owns the clicks

Volume is one scoreboard. Referral traffic is another, and on that one Google is not sweating much yet.

Google sends about 190 times more traffic to websites than ChatGPT does. ChatGPT’s click-through rate sits below 1%, and its referrals account for less than 1% of organic sessions across various analyses.

That is the structural difference between the two products. Google’s classic model sends you somewhere else. ChatGPT’s model tries to answer you right where you are.

For publishers and businesses that depend on search referrals, a ChatGPT session that resolves a question without a single click may count as a “search” for volume purposes while doing nothing for the website that supplied the underlying information.

What this means

There is also a measurement fight brewing. The gap between 7.5% and roughly 20% depends almost entirely on what counts as a search.

OpenAI benefits from the broadest framing, since it makes ChatGPT look like a peer to Google. Google benefits from the narrowest, which keeps attention on its overwhelming lead in clicks and referrals.

For now, ChatGPT has the volume and Google has the traffic.
