Music publisher Round Hill sues Anthropic and Suno over AI training with 500+ songs

The company is seeking damages that could potentially approach or exceed $1 billion.

Round Hill Music has filed separate copyright lawsuits against Anthropic and Suno, alleging the AI companies trained their systems on at least 500 copyrighted songs controlled by the independent music publisher.

Round Hill claims Anthropic used lyrics from the songs to train its Claude chatbot, while Suno allegedly used the same material to train its AI-powered music-generation platform.

The catalog includes songs associated with artists including James Brown, The Kinks and the Goo Goo Dolls.

The publisher warned that the current complaints could expand substantially, saying it may add 10,000 or more compositions and seek damages that could approach or exceed $1 billion.

Round Hill CEO Josh Gruss said the company plans to pursue both cases through trial rather than accepting a settlement that fails to compensate songwriters and artists adequately.

The cases come amid ongoing legal fights between copyright holders and AI companies over the use of creative works for model training.

Anthropic has faced lawsuits from major music-rights groups including UMG and BMG, while Suno faces separate litigation from UMG and Sony Music.
