Solana commands ~70% market share in x402 activity as broader transaction volumes decline
The high-speed blockchain has processed over 35 million cumulative x402 transactions, capturing roughly 70% of monthly protocol volume even as the wider ecosystem cools off.
Solana has quietly become the dominant chain for x402, the micropayment protocol that lets AI agents pay for APIs and data using USDC. As of mid-August 2026, Solana accounted for approximately 70% of monthly x402 protocol volume, processing a total transaction volume of around $24.24 million over the prior 30 days.
What x402 is and why it matters
The protocol, developed by the Coinbase Developer Platform team, repurposes the long-dormant HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status code to allow seamless, programmable payments between machines. An AI agent needs weather data from an API? It pays in USDC at the moment of the request, no subscription, no invoice, no human in the loop.
Cumulative activity across all chains using x402 is estimated to fall somewhere between 120 million and 187 million transactions, depending on which tracker you consult. Solana alone has processed over 35 million of those cumulatively.
Solana’s dominance in the numbers
On August 25, 2026, Solana surpassed Base in daily x402 transaction counts for the first time in six months. Base, Coinbase’s own Layer 2 network, had a natural head start given that x402 was built by Coinbase’s developer team.

Earlier in 2026, Solana’s x402 market share swung wildly, dipping as low as 49.7% at one point before climbing back up to as high as 88% during peak periods. Facilitators like Dexter and PayAI have consolidated significant market positions on Solana.
The organic growth question
The wide range in cumulative transaction estimates, spanning from 120 million to 187 million depending on the data source, hints at measurement challenges and possibly incentivized or non-organic transaction volumes inflating the headline numbers. Overall x402 activity has declined from its 2025 highs.
