A sharp half-hour sell-off wiped out leveraged bullish bets as Bitcoin and Ethereum dropped and traders cut their altcoin expectations

Crypto traders betting on higher prices had a very bad half hour. Exchanges liquidated $210 million in long positions over a 30-minute window.

The flush hit on October 22, 2026, as Bitcoin dipped toward $81,000 and Ethereum slid toward $2,300. Leverage, once again, turned an ordinary dip into a forced exit for a lot of people at once.

What happened in those 30 minutes

A long position is a bet that an asset’s price will go up. Many derivatives traders don’t just bet with their own money. They borrow to make the bet bigger, which is what leverage means.

Leverage cuts both ways. If the price moves against a leveraged trader far enough, the exchange closes the position automatically before the losses eat into borrowed funds. That automatic close is a liquidation.

On October 22, more than $210 million worth of those bullish bets got closed out across crypto derivatives platforms. Long liquidations dominated the session, which points to a rapid deleveraging during a broader market correction.

The damage was concentrated on major centralized derivatives venues. An exact breakdown by exchange was not provided.

When a long gets liquidated, the exchange has to sell to close it, and that selling adds pressure to an already falling market. Lower prices can trip the next batch of leveraged positions, which can push prices lower still.

Bitcoin held up slightly better than the rest of the market. Its dominance, meaning its share of the total crypto market, ticked up a little during the correction.

Sentiment toward at least one high-profile altcoin also took a hit. Prediction market odds that the Hyperliquid (HYPE) token reaches $100 by year-end dropped from 44% to 38.5%.

Not the first $210 million flush of 2026

Liquidation events in the $210 million range have happened multiple times throughout 2026. What sets the October 22 episode apart is its specific timing and the price levels involved. Bitcoin heading toward $81,000 and Ethereum drifting toward $2,300 gave this wave its particular backdrop.
