The oil giant pairs cash with AI, computing and digital assets as PIF keeps majority control of the kingdom's flagship AI venture

Saudi Aramco, the company best known for pulling oil out of the ground, now owns a big slice of a Saudi artificial intelligence company. It has acquired a 49% stake in HUMAIN, the AI firm set up by the kingdom’s Public Investment Fund.

Aramco will put in $2.6 billion in cash, along with AI and digital assets.

What Aramco is buying

The research findings put the deal’s value at approximately SAR 9.9 billion, or $2.6 billion. They say the transaction was officially announced on November 1, 2026.

The consideration isn’t purely cash. Aramco is also contributing AI, computing and digital assets, so it is bringing hardware and know-how along with its checkbook.

The Public Investment Fund (PIF), Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, keeps the remaining 51%. That leaves PIF with a controlling interest and Aramco as a heavyweight minority partner.

The partnership aims to push forward HUMAIN’s plan for an integrated AI ecosystem. That covers next-generation data centers, AI solutions built for specific industries, and ALLaM, a multimodal Arabic large language model.

The 3-gigawatt ambition

The headline number for HUMAIN isn’t the deal value. It is the company’s goal of deploying 3 gigawatts of AI data center capacity by 2030.

The research findings say the capacity is meant to serve growing demand both regionally and globally.

Background: a young company with a powerful parent

HUMAIN is not an old company. PIF established it in May 2025 to build up Saudi Arabia’s AI capabilities.

Aramco has also been leaning into technology for a while. According to the research findings, its earlier technology initiatives have generated $11.3 billion in realized value since 2023.

Why an oil giant wants an AI stake

The non-cash portion of the deal points to consolidation. By folding in AI, computing and digital assets, Aramco appears to be consolidating related capabilities into HUMAIN instead of running parallel efforts.

What this means

For PIF, the deal brings in a deep-pocketed partner without giving up control. Holding 51% means the sovereign fund still sets the direction while sharing the capital burden of a very expensive build-out.

The research findings frame the move as part of a broader trend of traditional industrial firms moving into advanced technology. They suggest the partnership could attract more funding, partnerships and innovation to the region’s tech sector.

For now, the picture is simple enough. Saudi Arabia’s oil champion and its sovereign wealth fund are now co-owners of the country’s AI ambitions, and both have serious capital riding on the outcome.
