AI agents can now buy domains on Atom using x402 payments via Coinbase
Atom's integration with Coinbase Business lets autonomous software complete domain purchases with stablecoins on Base
AI agents can now do more than browse domain listings. On Atom, they can complete the purchase themselves.
Atom.com, the premium domain marketplace run by AtomHQ, has integrated with Coinbase Business so that AI agents can pay for domains using x402 payments.
How the Atom and Coinbase integration works
The integration was officially revealed on October 15, 2026. It allows AI agents to buy domains through Coinbase Business checkouts, settling payments in stablecoins rather than cards or bank transfers.
Two stablecoins are supported: USDC and USDT. Both are dollar-pegged tokens, so the price an agent sees should match what it pays, without crypto volatility in between.
The transactions run on Base, the blockchain network developed by Coinbase. According to the research findings, payments in USDC and USDT carry no transaction limits, which opens the marketplace to buyers worldwide.
The inventory on offer is substantial. Atom lists over 2 million curated premium domain names across a range of extensions, and agents can now acquire any of them programmatically.
What x402 actually does
x402 is a payment protocol designed for machine-to-machine transactions. Its goal is to let software pay for things online as easily as it requests data.
One of its key features is gasless payments. Normally, sending tokens on a blockchain requires paying a network fee, known as gas, in the chain’s native currency.

x402 sidesteps that on Base by using EIP-3009 features with USDC. EIP-3009 is a technical standard that lets a token holder authorize a transfer with a signature, while someone else submits it to the network. The buyer signs off on the payment, and the fee logistics are handled elsewhere.
That design is particularly useful for micropayments under $0.10. When a payment is worth a few cents, a network fee can easily eat the whole thing.
Usage numbers suggest the protocol has found an audience. Chainalysis reported over 138 million x402 transactions on Base by Q3 2026, up from around 1,500 in mid-2025.
Chainalysis also found that 87% of those transactions cost under $0.10. In other words, the bulk of x402 activity has been tiny payments, the kind that agents make when paying per query or per API call.
The research findings describe Atom’s integration as one of the first uses of x402 for transferring tangible assets, with domain names as the asset in question.
Atom’s push into agent-driven commerce
This move did not come out of nowhere. Atom previously launched an MCP server in mid-2026, giving AI agents a way to handle domain discovery and pricing.
MCP servers act as a bridge between AI models and external services. They let an agent query a platform’s data in a structured way, much like a human using a search bar and a price filter.
The catch with that earlier setup was the final step. Agents could find and price domains, but closing the deal still required something else in the loop. The x402 integration fills that gap, turning discovery into an actual acquisition.
Atom CEO Darpan Munjal indicated that the integration fits the company’s strategic focus on agent-driven purchases in the domain space.
