Jarrad Branthwaite earns England call-up after injury recovery

Jarrad Branthwaite is back in the England picture. The 24-year-old Everton defender has been named in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the September 2026 Nations League matches against Spain, the Czech Republic, and Croatia, marking his first senior international inclusion since a brief substitute cameo back in June 2024.

That gap of more than two years tells its own story. Branthwaite has spent much of that time fighting chronic hamstring and groin problems reducing him to just 10 Premier League appearances during the entire 2025-26 season.

The Munich turning point

The road back ran through Germany. Branthwaite spent four to five weeks during the summer of 2026 at the Myos Sports and Health Clinic in Munich, a specialized facility that targeted the root causes of his recurring soft-tissue injuries rather than just treating symptoms.

Branthwaite returned to pre-season training in late July 2026, participated in Everton’s warm-up fixtures, and has since started every single Premier League match for the club under manager David Moyes in the opening weeks of the 2026-27 campaign.

Everton remain unbeaten in the early stages of the season, and Branthwaite has been central to that defensive solidity. The club has extended his contract through June 2030, with his market value sitting at approximately €38-40 million.

Two years in the wilderness

Branthwaite’s sole senior England appearance came as a 28-minute substitute in June 2024. The 2024-25 season was disrupted by groin issues requiring surgery. The 2025-26 season was worse, with just 10 league outings across the entire campaign, ending prematurely in April 2026 following a setback in a Merseyside derby.

Tuchel, who announced the call-up on September 18, 2026, acknowledged that Branthwaite had been on his radar throughout, with injuries making selection impossible.
