The exodus was driven by new head coach Xabi Alonso’s mandate to slim down an oversized roster he inherited upon arrival at Stamford Bridge.
The big names heading for the door
Enzo Fernandez, the Argentine midfielder Chelsea signed for a then-British-record fee, completed a move to Manchester City for £125 million. Marc Cucurella headed to Real Madrid for approximately £52 million. Nicolas Jackson departed to Aston Villa in a deal valued at around £65 million.
The total revenue generated from outgoing business is estimated between £300 million and upwards of £460 million when factoring in add-ons and loan fees.
Spending big on the way in
Chelsea reinvested aggressively, headlined by the signing of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117 million, making him the most expensive British signing in history. Additional arrivals included Maxence Lacroix, Geovany Quenda, Marco Palestra, and Emiliano Martinez. Total spending on incoming talent was estimated between £280 million and £328 million.

Why this happened now
Chelsea will not compete in European competition during the 2026-27 season. Without Champions League or Europa League matches on the calendar, carrying a bloated squad made no tactical or financial sense. The squad had grown unwieldy after several windows of aggressive buying under the Todd Boehly-Clearlake Capital ownership group.
Chelsea’s spending since the 2022 ownership change had drawn scrutiny from regulators, pundits, and rival clubs. Generating substantial sales revenue while trimming the wage bill addresses Profitability and Sustainability Rules compliance alongside having a coherent squad structure.
