Chelsea FC has closed a deal worth £117 million to sign 23-year-old England forward Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, making him the most expensive British footballer in history. The seven-year contract, confirmed on July 21, runs through June 2032 with an option to extend into 2033.

The fee edges past the previous British-player record set when Elliot Anderson moved to Manchester City for £116 million.

Why this deal matters beyond the pitch

Rogers chose Chelsea over Arsenal, and the reason apparently had a name: Xabi Alonso. The newly appointed Chelsea head coach was described by Rogers as a “massive factor” in his decision.

A seven-year deal, with an eighth-year option, is the football equivalent of a long-duration bond. It smooths the accounting hit across more financial years, making the annual amortization charge roughly £16.7 million rather than a lump sum. That matters enormously under UEFA’s financial sustainability regulations, which cap the losses clubs can report.

Aston Villa confirmed Rogers’ departure on the same day the deal was announced. Middlesbrough, where Rogers began his career, holds a sell-on clause entitling them to approximately £20.3 million from the transaction.
