Chime Financial pushes into investing, setting up a collision course with Robinhood

Chime Financial pushes into investing, setting up a collision course with Robinhood

The fintech banking app with over 10 million members is rolling out stock trading and custodial retirement accounts, signaling a broader shift in how everyday consumers access markets.

Chime Financial, the fintech company that built its brand on fee-free banking for everyday consumers, is making a significant leap into the investment business. The company plans to let its customers trade individual stocks and ETFs through its platform, a move that puts it squarely in the crosshairs of incumbents like Robinhood.

From banking app to investment platform

Chime’s investment push has multiple prongs. The company has partnered with Invest America to launch custodial IRAs for minors, branded as “Trump Accounts,” which align with a broader administration policy aimed at promoting intergenerational wealth building. These accounts allow investments in low-cost index funds and ETFs that track major US equity indexes like the S&P 500.

Eligible children born between 2025 and 2028 can receive a $1,000 seed contribution in US Treasury funds. Chime has facilitated roughly 130,000 Trump Accounts, and CEO Chris Britt has noted that hundreds of thousands of members are actively in the process of setting up these accounts. Chime has 10.2 million active members.

Beyond the custodial accounts, Chime is preparing to launch full customer investment accounts that will enable trading in individual stocks and ETFs as early as June 2026.

The financial picture behind the push

Chime reported net income of $53 million in Q1 2026, marking its first-ever GAAP profitable quarter. Revenue climbed 25% year-over-year during the same period.

Chime trades on the Nasdaq under the ticker CHYM. The partnership with Invest America, which commenced on May 29, 2026, provides the infrastructure backbone for these offerings.

Why this matters for markets and investors

Chime is specifically targeting people with minimal investment experience. The company has also partnered with the Council for Economic Education, signaling that financial literacy is core to the product strategy.

Chime’s current investment roadmap does not include cryptocurrency or digital assets. The company is focused entirely on traditional equities and retirement vehicles.

The 130,000 Trump Accounts opened so far represent just over 1% of total active members. The full investment accounts are slated to launch in June 2026.
